Although there are some efforts to define and describe internationalisation of higher education by different authors and the work is particularly useful to help understand internationalisation processes, there is no common shared understanding. The aim is to illuminate the way in which internationalisation of higher education is described and understood, using concept analysis. Firstly, I identified the concept definitions, attributes, antecedents, and consequences of internationalisation of higher education and constructed framework based on the findings of this review. This involved an exploration of the characteristics and attributes that describe and define internationalisation of higher education. Theoretical thematic analysis was employed to get meaning of the data. The study revealed that the ambiguity regarding the concept persists, because internationalisation has multiple definitions which are continuously being updated. The study also recognizes internationalisation of higher education as a strategy; consequently, internationalisation as a strategy is the sum of internationalisation activities which are executed in order to run higher education while responding to higher education institution’s international function.
