Plant communities on the sandy beaches of Martinique are subject to anthropogenic and abiotic disturbance. This study assesses disturbance regimes and the resulting diversity of ecotones by analysing floristic assemblages, historical orthophotography and field observations. The concepts of dynamic state mosaics and tipping points are used to interpret the evolutionary trajectories of these formations. The results reveal the coexistence of plant communities at different successional stages, influenced by past and present pressures. Interactions with adjacent agrosystems, informal uses, developed infrastructure and coastal erosion modulate the resilience of these communities, favouring the emergence of steep, progressive, mosaic ecotones. Underscoring the importance of integrated, adaptive management of coastal zones, the accumulation of disturbances beyond critical thresholds can lead to irreversible ecological change.
