Forecasting an Inevitable Coalition Government at the National Level in South Africa: A New Path to Public Administration and Governance

Abstract

Coalition administrations frequently occur in democracies and under all election systems. One of the key reasons that parties join coalition governments is to share power or to advocate about policy change or policy reform. Additionally, a national catastrophe can force political parties to form an alliance. This occurs whenever there is a disagreement of some kind, a crisis involving the constitution or the succession, or a dramatic upheaval in politics. As a result, the parties decide to work together as a coalition and establish official agreements to divide administrative authority or accountability. This paper analyses the literature on coalition governments and scenarios that fore shadow a coalition government in South Africa’s upcoming 2024 elections. It suggests a framework that could facilitate to form a coalition government that may lead to the best interests of the country if no party wins the majority in the parliament.
