This study aimed to investigated the psychometric properties of the High Potential Traits Inventory (HPTI), particularly reliability, structure as well as convergent and predictive validity. The previously established six-factor structure (MacRae & Furnham, 2014) was tested through structural equation modelling (SEM), along with subscale reliabilities measured by Cronbach’s α. All subscales had high reliability. Convergent validity with the NEO-PI-R was also tested. All HPTI and NEO-PI-R personality factors were regressed on a measure of subjective success to determine predictive validity. Model fit was sufficient for early scale validation, but suggested more work needs to be done. HPTI subscales were highly correlated with subjective success, and significantly better predictors of subjective success when all personality factors were regressed on a measure of subjective success. Limitations, implications, and the need for further work are discussed.
